The concept behind building this website was originally to provide an online photo gallery source for poultry enthusiasts to see examples of what exhibition quality poultry look like. It has now evolved to become Canada’s exhibition poultry magazine, available online for free and in print with a subscrition!
The American Poultry Association Standard of Perfection does a fantastic job at providing detailed descriptions of each breed as well as paintings for most breeds, but sometimes it is nice to see what that translates to in real life!
Matthew Smith
Matthew Smith brings more than two decades of dedication, leadership, and hands on experience to Poultry Pages. A lifelong member of the exhibition poultry community, he now leads the Fowl Creatures 4-H Poultry Club based in Greater Victoria, after being a member in the club since he was 9 years old. Throughout that time, he has been an active exhibitor, known especially for his commitment to waterfowl and his long standing focus on Black and White Magpie Ducks.
Matthew holds a Bachelor of Science in Biology and Environmental Studies from the University of Victoria, along with a Master of Community Planning from Vancouver Island University. His academic background strengthens his practical experience, giving him a broad understanding of animal care, environmental stewardship, and community engagement.
He also contributed to the BC Poultry Health Network, where he played a key role in developing infographics, social media content, and educational bulletins – work that helped improve communication and outreach across the province’s small flock poultry community.
Now, as part of the Poultry Pages team, Matthew is excited to help build a resource that informs, connects, and celebrates Canada’s exhibition poultry community. His passion for education, youth involvement, and collaboration shapes his vision for a magazine that brings people together and strengthens the hobby for years to come.
Clayton Botkin
Clayton Botkin is a professional agrologist specializing in livestock production, management, extension, and education. He is one of Canada’s licenced poultry judges with both the American Poultry Association and the American Bantam Association along with many other board and volunteer roles! Clayton has raised and exhibited exhibition poultry and wildfowl for over 25 years, and his career has spanned various poultry sectors, regulated markets, corporate, and government roles. He is a master exhibitor and achieved his grand master exhibitor status in brown Chinese geese with the American Poultry Association. Formally, Clayton holds a One Health Masters degree from the University of Alaska Fairbanks, a certificate in risk management from Simon Fraser University, and a Bachelor of Science in Applied Biology from UBC.
With his recent work on the BC Poultry Health Network’s biosecurity and disease prevention program, he has contributed to advancing best practices and safeguarding poultry health with farms of varying size and complexity. His many other volunteer and professional commitments further demonstrate his dedication and impact to supporting and advancing One Health, connecting people, animals, and the environment to tackle the issues we face. Clayton is always open to meeting new people, exploring new and novel ideas and concepts, and welcomes connection and supporting others in their professional development and he is really excited about being part of the Poultry Pages team!
